Second Life

Similar to the topic of “How Obama Did It”, this helps people to connect with each other. This program seems to take socializing to another level by helping the children who are psychologically scared of socializing to overcome their fear. “They easily get in touch with people that they don't personally know," said Llewelyn, explaining how the children, who are forced into hiding to get away from abusive parents, benefit from the game. "This means we seem to break a barrier of socializing." It also allows people with different illnesses who usually have a hard time communicating to easily do what they typically cannot.

“In Second Life, there are no defined limits to the ways players can interact. They can communicate and socialize through normal chatting or instant messaging, or in clubs or associations.” This statement stirs up the idea of the negative effects of social networking. The people of who use this program may inherently become lost in this world where they can be whoever they want to be. Creating their own personality, developing the second life with not limits, or even becoming addicted to the point where it is almost unhealthy where this is the only thing they would do beside eating and sleeping.

How Obama Did It

During the presidential campaign, a networking site used for many purposes was MyBo.
This site is used to categorized and organized data, accept donations, give directions to the workers, etc. One of its most important functions for this site and other social networking site or this campaign is described in this sentence,

“The campaign, consciously or unconsciously, became much more of a media operation that simply a presidential campaign, because they recognized that by putting their message out onto these various platforms, their supporters would spread it for them.”

The campaign used social networking to help gather supporters and keep those supporters and others updated on his views. Since the beginning of the campaign until the end, and even currently, social networking sites are used by Obama and his workers. Social networking has helped Obama in his campaign in spreading his message and easily keeps connected with the supporters and his staff.

Effects of Social Networking

In the first few seconds of the start of the program, a person describes that they are addicted and can find themselves on it for hours. This is very true considering how far technology has advance now. People use it because it is easy and almost everyone else also uses it. While some people can be themselves online, others create a whole new self. The internet is an easier place for someone to express themselves or do what they want.
A person can post an unlimited amount of pictures or message online. It helps children and teens alike to communicate with each other. This is raises the concern of parents. Since these users can post what they like, the parents loses the control of what is put online for everyone else to see. They cannot be assure that the person their child is talking to may be a person whom they attend school with or the child is starting a relationship with someone who is as old as they may be. The internet is a place where many people young or old interact with each other. It allows people to create false identities, helps people stay connected, find new friends, etc. It is useful in many way, but can also have dangerous consequences.
